Tips for protecting plants from Frost and Cold Weather

If you are a bit confused about protecting plants from frost and cold weather you are not alone.

Below are a few tips to help you

Pay attention to the weather forecasts – Drier conditions pose a higher risk of frost damage.

Beware that a single night of frost has the potential to kill your tender plants so don’t be caught out.

Hardy plants e.g Clematis, Honeysuckle, Hydrangea’s, Heuchera’s  can generally cope with a short spell of freezing night temperatures before showing frost damage

Tender plants e.g Fuchsia’s, Dahlia’s, Begonia’s, Succulents will not survive a frost and will need protecting or brought indoors over winter.

If you are not sure if your plant is Hardy or Tender then check the care label if still attached  or a plant identification app will help you.

Move tender plants which are in pots to a more sheltered area. Keep container’s in a dry, sheltered area, group  them together for more protection. Prevent roots freezing in pots by wrapping them with bubble polythene.

Mulching the base of plants in the ground will help to protect the roots when temperatures drop. Wrapping plants in horticultural fleece will help to protect their leaves.

Beware some winters are harsher than others and a plant which survived last year may not supply the following so be cautious and protect your plants if unsure.
