Now is a great time to clean and tidy up the garden for spring.
Here are a few useful tips to help you get going
- Tidy the garden borders – remove fallen leaves, twigs and branches from your borders. Remove any weeds and if the soil is workable add some organic matter.
- Clear vegetable beds – remove any debris, remove weeds, re mulch and add organic manure.
- Clear weeds – not just from your beds and borders but also pathways, patios and anywhere else the may have popped up.
- Remove any unwanted plants or plants which have died over the winter.
- Tidy up herbaceous perennials – remove seed heads, many perennials can now be cut back to the base.
- Clean and wash your greenhouse to remove any leftover pests and prevent disease. Wash with disinfectant or detergent. Sweep out any plant debris.
- Scrub pots and trays so they are clean and ready for sowing and planting.
- Hunt down and remove garden pests – this will save you a lot of time come spring. Check crowns of herbaceous perennials for slugs, snails, aphid which have sheltered over winter. Check the root systems of plants which vine weevil like, remove any grubs you find
