Its time to examine your lawn for signs of summer wear and tear. Now is a good time to carry out any treatment as the grass can still respond before the temperatures fall and growth stops for the season.
These tips will improve the quality and health of the lawn right through into following spring and beyond
Mowing – the rate of growth will slow so mowing is less frequent so raise the height of the blade
Feeding –change to an Autumn feed so the lawn gets the essential nutrients needed to help strengthen itself.
Overseeding – Depending on the wear and tear you may want to over seed . The seed will germinate ahead of winter and fill in any sparse areas.
Top dressing – this will even out any low areas. Add some grass seed to the dressing to fill in areas. Best to top dress when the lawn is dry.
Moss and Scarification – If moss is a problem then scarify it out and consider treating with a moss-killer. Scarifying reduces the dead grass matter, roots and moss. Use a spring-tine rake by vigorously pulling the rake through the grass.
Aeration –use a fork or a spiking machine on compact areas of the lawn this will relieve compaction, improve drainage and allow air into the root system.
Remember to clear the lawn of fallen leaves and other debris as lawns relies on light as well as the correct balance of heat, water, air and food.
